At the beginning of the story, PUGGY came up the mountain to play with the little rabbit.
The world seemed peaceful and bright. The mountain breeze drifted gently through the grass, and sunlight spilled over the cliffs and winding paths. Full of excitement, PUGGY climbed happily along the mountain trail, eager to find its dear friend. In its heart, this was meant to be another ordinary, beautiful day—one filled with laughter, play, and the simple joy of being together.
Then, in an instant, everything changed.
All the sounds in the world vanished. Only the wind remained, crying in its ears. PUGGY lay at the edge of the cliff, its wrinkled little face frozen with confusion and fear. It looked down into the bottomless valley below, a dark abyss that had swallowed all the happiness it had only just found. Its ears drooped helplessly, and its heart pounded wildly inside its tiny chest, as if it might shatter its own ribs.
One second. Two seconds.
Then it suddenly forced itself to its feet.
Grief did not break it—it ignited it. Turning around, PUGGY rushed down the steep mountain path with every ounce of strength it had.
It found the rabbit at the bottom of the valley. That once snow-white fur was now stained with mud and blood. The rabbit’s leg was bleeding, and its body lay completely still, as if it had fallen asleep. PUGGY gently nudged it with its nose, but there was no response.
A wave of terror seized PUGGY, but it had no time to be afraid.
Lowering itself, carefully yet with unshakable determination, it lifted the rabbit’s soft body onto its own tiny back.
What followed was a journey that felt endless. PUGGY’s legs burned, and its lungs felt as though they were on fire. It pushed through forests tangled with thorns, sharp branches tearing at its skin without it even noticing. It ran along dusty village roads, every step as heavy as lead. There was only one path in its mind—the road to the hospital.
This is the beginning of a deeply moving animal story: a tiny body carrying the weight of a tremendous promise.
When PUGGY finally burst through the hospital doors and handed the rabbit over to the doctors in white coats, its legs gave way beneath it, and it nearly collapsed on the floor.
The light above the operating room remained on, like a distant and indifferent star. PUGGY sat motionless outside the door, like a tiny statue. Time lost all meaning there; every second was agony.
No one knew how long had passed before the light finally went out.
And when the rabbit opened its eyes again, the first thing it saw was PUGGY.
Its little friend was holding a small yellow flower in its mouth—somehow found from who knows where—and walking toward it, step by gentle step.
The rabbit looked at PUGGY, let out a weak little cry, and then struggled forward into its arms. PUGGY closed its eyes and gently pressed its forehead against the rabbit’s.
This time, it would never let its friend fall again.
